A great New York classic, invented in 1906 by Johnny Solon, a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria, for the opening of the Bronx Zoo of the same name.

Shake the ingredients in a shaker with ice cubes.

Pour into a chilled Martini glass, holding back the ice.

Garnish with a brandied cherry.
